Sandbach yarn bombers honour world snowboarding champion with creative work
By Deborah Bowyer 1st Feb 2026
Sporting superstar, Mia Brookes, is renowned for her triumphs on the slopes.
The 19-year-old, who is from Sandbach and went to Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College, became Britain's youngest snowboarding world champion.
She was crowned BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2023 and recently won gold at the X Games for Britain as she prepares to head off to the Winter Olympics in Italy which start next Friday (6 February).

She beat New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott to women's slopestyle gold at the Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships in Georgia becoming Britain's youngest snowboarding world champion as we revealed here .
Mia, who learnt to snowboard at Kidsgrove Ski Centre when she was small, may be concentrating all her efforts on her performance at the Winter Olympics but she has something closer to home to celebrate.
For ladies at the weekly Yarn and Yarn group held in the Ballroom at Sandbach Town Hall have crocheted and knitted a postbox topper in her honour. The result is stunning - complete ski slope, snowboard and an Olympic torch!

Sue Weir from Ettiley Heath, who helps run the group with Helen Ireland of Helen's Emporium in Sandbach, said it was completed in just two weeks.
"Someone just throws out an idea of what we should do and it just grows. We each do different bits according to our strengths and then put it together," said Sue.
"None of us know Mia personally but we've all heard of her and many of us will be watching her in the Winter Olympics. She's achieved so much and we wanted to celebrate her achievements for Sandbach.
"We hope one day when she's back in Sandbach Mia will come and see it but we know how busy she is."

In the meantime, residents visiting the Sandbach's Royal Mail Delivery office in Market Square will have the pleasure of seeing the mini Mia crocheted in all her glory on top of the post box outside.
Members of the Yarn and Yarn group, who meet every Monday morning, are already into their next project, an idea based on 'The Longest Yarn' which will feature businesses on the Cobbles and which the group hopes will hang in the Town Hall.
The group was set up in April 2024 as we revealed here and their work is seen all over the town tied in with seasons and events
"We're a lovely group and have such a good time as well as using our skills," said Helen. "Anyone is welcome to come along and join us."
