Young school children in Sandbach are to have their chance to play a part in shaping the future of their town.

Youngsters from six primary schools are being asked what they would like to see in Sandbach and then invited to come up with a project to put into practice .

Children are being asked to devise projects to make their town better and then present the ideas to councillors at a meeting of Sandbach Town Council.

The scheme is the brainchild of school engagement lead, Councillor Simon Richards, himself a former teacher.

Cllr Richards wanted to come up with a project to involve young children and see the impact of their work and that of the town council.

"We're going to invite each primary school to come up with a proposal to improve Sandbach for the children of sandbach. This can be big or small," said Cllr Richards.

"As an example, a few years ago in Alsager they proposed to lower all the bins to child height.

"It's a great chance to engage the children of Sandbach. They can see something tangible that they have contributed to their town."

Schools being invited to take part in the project are Wheelock, Elworth Hall, Elworth Church of England, Sandbach Primary, St John's Primary and Offley Primary.

Sandbach Town Council's full council agreed the funding provision for the project at its recent meeting.

"What will be good is for these children to see their ideas become a permanent feature of the town," said Cllr Richards.

"They will be able to look back in years to come and see the work they did at primary school.

"It's an exciting project and we're looking forward to getting the entries."

Cllr Richards feels it's important to get children from an early age involved in their town.

A father of two young children himself, he ensures that they get involved in what is happening in their town.

"We take them to local things which are happening and they see the work which I do in the town. It's important for them to feel involved," said Cllr Richards.
