Brindley's Mill: an illustrated talk

Did you know that the famous 18th Century canal engineer, James Brindley, was originally apprenticed as a millwright at Langley, near Macclesfield? He ran his own millwright business in Leek and built a corn mill there in 1752, some seven years before his first involvement with canals.

Restored in the 1970s, Brindley's Mill is now a visitor attraction, run by a volunteer team, who demonstrate how its waterwheel powers the milling of wheat into flour.

The mill also has a 'museum' section about Brindley's work, including his own 'level', a forerunner of the theodolite, used when surveying in preparation for canal-building.

Brindley's Mill is the fourth illustrated presentation in Mike Tingle's Tuesday Talks series at Congleton Library. Come and hear about the man and his eponymous mill.

Entry is free, but donations to the Brindley Mill Trust will be much appreciated.
